Morality of Pro-Life

A Celebration of Reading

Sister Joan ChittisterI do not believe that just because you’re opposed to abortion, that that makes you pro-life. In fact, I think in many cases, your morality is deeply lacking if all you want is a child born but not a child fed, not a child educated, not a child housed. And why would I think that you don’t? Because you don’t want any tax money to go there. That’s not pro-life. That’s pro-birth. We need a much broader conversation on what the morality of pro-life is. — Sister Joan Chittister, O.S.B.

Yours is a learned objection absolutely disconnected from experienced reality. Meaning, there is NOTHING in the empirical evidence that suggests a society devoid of any access to abortion leads to a surplus of unwanted and neglected children. In fact, ALL THE EVIDENCE suggests that a society that provides access to abortion and contraception will then gain a surplus of unwanted and neglected children. And there is a reason for this, but it requires a deeper analysis of the “pro-life” movement. For there is the “universal pro-lifer” who is ACTUALLY a radical liberal set on the rightful existence of his own killer and then there is the individual conscience instinctively assertive in his right to life at conception. What “we” have in America are radical liberals from top to bottom putting on entertaining debates IN ORDER TO OBSCURE THE FACT that all sides are self-annihilators from the “universal pro-lifer” who would have evil come into existence to the might-makes-right “mother” who kills her own child and a part of herself to that very child, here on a mere mother’s whim, scrubbed of his natural instinct for the right to exist from the very beginning. And then growing into adulthood to perpetuate the self-annihilating ethos.
